Special Services for 2026:
Lenten Services 7:00 p.m. (February 18, 2026 to March 25, 2026)
During February and March, we are dedicating Wednesday evenings from 7:00-7:45 p.m. to grow in our relationship with our Savior. We believe that the more we know about Jesus, the more we’ll be drawn to worship and adore Him. The Lenten season begins this Wednesday, February 18, 2026 with an Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 p.m. Lenten suppers will be from 5:00 p.m.- 6:45 p.m.
Even though the Scriptures do NOT mention Lent, it has been a longstanding tradition of the Christian Church. It was a time of preparation for Easter. From the earliest of times, it was customary for Christians to fast before Easter. At first, it was a two-day fast (Friday and Saturday). As time passed, the fast was extended to a week. By 350 AD the church observed forty days of Lent, making it a time of repentance and self-denial.
At the time of the Reformation (1500's), some Christians wanted to eliminate Lent since Scripture didn't command it. But Martin Luther urged that it be kept, since he saw it as an opportunity to strengthen faith in Christ. Luther said: "Lent, Palm Sunday and Holy Week shall be retained, not to force anyone to fast, but to preserve the Passion History and the Gospels appointed for that season."
"Passion." We are familiar with this word from the movie, The Passion of the Christ. The word really denotes great feeling, particularly suffering or agony. During this Lenten season we will reflect on the passion of our Lord, view His deep love for us and hold the cross before our eyes, which is the eternal sign of His love.
At Shepherd of the Valley we are convinced that the more you know about Jesus, the more you'll be drawn to worship and adore Him. That's why we're dedicating our Wednesday evenings during March to grow in our relationship with our Savior. A brief service will be held each Wednesday from 7:00 - 7:35 p.m.
